From the recording Songs From My 3rd Life
A remix of a 1930's standard from "Ziegfeld Follies". The Ziegfeld Follies of 1936 is a musical revue with lyrics by Ira Gershwin, music by Vernon Duke and sketches by Gershwin and David Freedman. The Ziegfeld Follies were a series of revues presented from 1907 through 1931 and beyond.
A man first sang this song but a woman’s voice changes the meaning. In our modern experience it’s not a huge deal - women do fly all around the world every day (although only about 5% of airline pilots are women), but in the 1930s they didn’t. A year after the song was released, Amelia Earhart did fly around the world in a plane, and we still talk about her today. She was groundbreaker. It is incredible how far women have come, yet how far we still have to go.
Lyrics
I’ve flown around the world in a plane
I’ve settled revolutions in Spain
The North Pole I have charted
But I can’t get started with you
I dream both day and night of you
But tell me what good does it do
And you have me downhearted
Cuz I can’t get started with you…..
When the time was right…… I sold short
In London I’m presented at court
But you have me downhearted
Cuz I can’t get started with you….
…….“I’ve flown around the world
……“I’ve flown around the world - - - world
